What is Food Poisoning?

When eaten food contains a large amount of bacteria that has multiplied in the hot weather due to being left out of the fridge for too long.

How Long Can Food Poisoning Last?

Food poisoning usually goes away within a few days. This is because the idea behind vomiting and diarrhoea is for the body to get rid of the infection. However, symptoms can last up to a week especially if foods are consumed to make it worse. In most cases, people tend to make a full recovery within 72hours.

Tips to Dealing with Food Poisoning

Tip #1: Drink lots of water

Drinking plenty of water can flush out toxins in the body and potentially reduce the amount of bacteria in the body.

Tip #2: Avoid dairy products

Diary products can generally contain harmful germs which can make food poisoning even worse

Tip #3: Avoid spicy foods/drinks

Spicy foods contain Capsaicin which can irritate the lining of the digestive tract. So to protect itself the gut tends to speed up to get rid of Capsaicin faster from the digestive system which can lead to diarrhoea.

Tip #4: Avoid caffeine containing foods/drinks

Caffeine is known to be a stimulant that generally makes a person feel mentally alert. However, it can also stimulate the digestive tract causing food poisoning to get worse. Caffeine containing products include;

  • coffee
  • chocolate
  • tea
  • coke
  • energy drinks

Tip #5: Consume oral rehydration sachets

Rehydration sachets contain electrolytes like glucose and different salts. The idea is to help replace lost fluids and salts that are lost during vomiting and diarrhoea. So it helps to avoid dehydration during food poisoning.
